- State changed from new to invalid
Apparently state machine has been removed from Rails 3:
"While an implementation of State Machine has been in Active Record edge for some months now, it has been removed from the Rails 3.0 release."
http://guides.rails.info/3_0_release_notes.html
This might be a good fit, though

Updating to upcoming as invalid as Caike mentioned.
There is an example on how to use state_machine within the tests, default support to its API would be a good fit, definately.
